Albany State wasted no time sweeping the Clark Atlanta Panthers 3-0 (25-13, 23-12, 25-20) in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
The Rams built sizable leads in excess of 10 points in both of the first two sets and cruised to a 2-0 advantage. Shaniya Banks notched five of the Rams’ 17 kills in the first set. Jarianis Perez and Josiya Teague chipped in three kills each in support. Jasmine Moore led the Panthers’ scoring effort with four kills. Albany State outscored their hosts 9-4 down the stretch to secure the first set.
Libero Myra Lopez served up five aces to help the Rams build a 5-0 lead in the second set. Clark Atlanta was unable to match Albany in any offensive statistic other than kills. Christen Maloney and Sawyer Arbuckle had three kills each to stay on pace with kills 7-9. Eight of the Rams’ points were attack errors made by the Panthers. The Panthers gifted three of the last five points to the Rams, including the game-winner.
Clark Atlanta gave their best effort in the third and final set. The Panthers forced the Rams to commit as many errors as they committed. Liannette Burgos notched three of the Rams’ five service aces to maintain a slim lead. The Panthers tied the set at 11-11 and got as close as 20-21 on a kill by Maloney. Banks returned to the floor and ignited a 5-0 run to clinch the match.
Albany State improves their record to 6-0 in the SIAC, while Clark Atlanta drops to 1-4.
