Kennesaw State shook off a slow start in the first quarter to down Charleston Southern 24-19 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
The visiting Bucs posted the first points on the scoreboard with a touchdown to start the second quarter. Jack Chambers found Jordan Cayden on an eight route for an 18-yard touchdown to cap a 9-play, 71-yard drive. Chambers finished 14 of 23 for 160 yards and one touchdown.
Charleston Southern’s score seemed to awaken the Owls which had managed a less than robust 53 yards of total offense and only 18 plays in the first quarter. Jonathan Murphy and company converted three third downs and one fourth down in the midst of a 13-play drive. Murphy capped the drive in an unusual manner -with the pass. He found senior Kyle Glover at about the 15-yard line. Glover did the rest. The 215-pound senior ran through the Bucs 170-pound freshman defensive back Matthew Williams the final five into the end zone.
Kennesaw reeled off another 17 points including a 51-yard touchdown reception by Caleb O’Neal to kick-off the fourth quarter. The score was the converted quarterback’s second touchdown reception of his career.
Two rushing touchdowns (18 yards and 1 yard) from Chambers narrowed the scoring gap but it was too little and too late.
