Clark Atlanta’s women’s basketball team used a 19-0 run to spark a 91-56 blowout of LeMoyne Owen at L.S. Epps Gym Saturday afternoon for their first conference win of the year.
Atreonia Garner led the Lady Panthers’ scoring attack with 18 points. Trinity Jones and Corriana Evans were right on her heels with 17 and 16 points respectively. Jones had the hot hand from beyond the arc going 4 for 6 from deep. The trio was supported by seven teammates who chipped in at least two points.
When the Lady Panthers weren’t snapping the nets on 51.6% shooting they were harassing the Lady Magicians into turnovers. CAU finished the day with 15 steals and scored 34 points off 27 turnovers by LeMoyne Owen.
The Magicians were led by Staisha Hamilton’s 18 points. The senior guard was 7 of 12 from the floor including 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.
CAU closed out the first half on an 8-0 run and opened the second half on an 11-0 run. Keria McGhee ended the run with a well-timed three. LeMoyne Owen was able to trim a little off the lead until Lizzie Walker fouled Evans on a layup for an and-one opportunity. The lead swelled to 30 points on the heels of the completed three-point play.
A frenzied fourth-quarter defense helped increase CAUs lead to as high as 38 by the midpoint of the quarter. The trapping defense forced turnovers before the Magicians could get to half-court or a step beyond.
The Lady Panthers will face Tuskegee when they suit up again on Saturday, Nov. 30.
